Explore
The Lower Zambezi National Park gets its namesake from its lifesource – the mighty Zambezi River. Downstream from the famous Victoria Falls, this untamed safari treasure boasts many gems – from its escarpment, to its wildlife, to its location across from the incredible Mana Pools National park.
The escarpment creates a natural boundary which keeps the game roaming within the floodplains below. It also provides a stunning backdrop to the park’s scenery – blue mountain hues contrasting to the greens and browns within the park. When arriving by light aircraft, the view of the escarpment as well as the winding waters of the Zambezi river gifts your first breathtaking moments of this area. Ox bow lagoons and sandbanks are dotted with hippo and crocodiles and buffalo, elephants and plains game are seen moving to and from the river.
Wildlife
With its variety of ecosystems – from forests to savannah to floodplains, the park holds a diversity of wildlife. Being a smaller park, wildlife is abundant – four of the big five present in the area. One may see herds of elephant and buffalo swimming across to islands for lush fertile grass. Plains game, zebra, impala and occasionally roan keep a keen ear out for the healthy population of apex predators; lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena all following in their footsteps. Riverine birdlife fringe Zambezi waters, wading birds, kingfishers, bee-eaters; making this a haven for keen birders, adding to the Africa bucketlist.
The Lower Zambezi is best explored on foot, immersing in the wilderness, following in the footsteps of a professional guide. Canoe safaris provide another option for intimate wildlife encounters, cruising upon the Zambezi river itself, gently floating up to game, non-invasive and respectful. A treasure chest waiting to be explored.
